Banned Books Week (BBW) is here and it's time to celebrate those authors whose voices have been challenged under the auspices of censorship. From September 24-30, 2017, indie bookshops, libraries, large bookstores, publishers, and writers' organizations will celebrate books that have battled with censorship.
Participate in Banned Books Week
This year, the Banned Books Week Coalition (BBWC) of associations and book distributors, including Ingram Content Group, invites independent booksellers to participate in activities related to the concept of censorship. Whether you create a window display showcasing banned books, hold in store events, or join the #BannedBooksWeek conversation on social media, start your celebration of BBW by making your titles available to all readers.
Celebrate the Freedom to Read
Can you imagine not having been allowed to read Of Mice and Men? Or I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings? Or Harry Potter?! All these books have been challenged at one time or another. BBW is the time writers, readers, bookshops, advocacy groups, and others stand up for the right to read. Independent booksellers can fight censorship by participating in this celebration and stocking up on banned books before BBW.
Celebrating Banned Books Week means celebrating the freedom to read, a First Amendment right that should be appreciated, defended, and upheld. Readers celebrate their power over censorship by purchasing, reading, and discussing banned books. This kind of intellectual freedom is aided by indie booksellers who promote the sale and reading of banned books. Take advantage of Ingram's special discount to stock up on diverse titles before BBW and create a display that will encourage community participation, good reading -- and sales.
