E-Commerce Can Blend with Indies

Some independent bookstores are taking to heart the old adage, “a rising tide lifts all boats.” It may seem counter-intuitive, but technology and online sales - once seen as the death knell for independent bookstores - are actually proving to be a boon to the indies.

Spark-ing Conversations at Nashville Public Library

By: Emily Waltenbaugh, Public Information Officer, Nashville Public Library & Ryan Darrow, Special Collections Librarian, Nashville Public Library

The Special Collections division at Nashville Public Library (NPL) tells the story of Nashville. The mission of NPL Special Collections is to explore Nashville’s past, inspire conversation, and anticipate stories to come. A large part of that mission is the collection and preservation of oral histories, as with NPL’s Veterans History Project (VHP). NPL hired an author to transcribe and compile many of these histories collected from World War II veterans in 2003, to put them into context and to provide perspective. NPL Special Collections wanted a bound version of this inspiring collection, and IngramSpark provided the ideal platform. NPL Special Collections librarian Ryan Darrow discussed the experience with Ingram and the various ways NPL supports its writing community.

Book Trailer: What Makes Us Unique

When it comes to explaining physical, cultural and religious differences to children, it can be difficult to know where to begin. What Makes Us Unique? provides an accessible introduction to the concept of diversity, teaching children how to respect and celebrate people’s differences and that ultimately, we are all much more alike than we are different. Additional questions at the back of the book allow for further discussion.

Libraries and the Places We Call Home

That casual mention came on the heels of a few related events.

Books Can Take Readers to New Places

Modern bookselling has a storied past. Some of the earliest booksellers - including personalities like Benjamin Franklin - were printers. As such, the historical role of bookseller was as a source of ideas and fomenter of progress.
