What’s the Difference? iCurate Coming Soon versus Standing Order Plans

Here in Ingram’s Collection Development Department, we have a staff of professional librarians who all have real-world library experience, and this team is dedicated to creating the services that we know our library customers will benefit the most from. It’s why we gladly proclaim there are no robots here! I’d like to take a moment to do a not-too-deep dive into two of those services: Standing Order Plans and iCurate® Coming Soon.

Standing Order Plans (SOPs) are complimentary, which helps customers with limited budgets keep up with the newest publications. They are extensive. We have 22 different offerings to assist with a multitude of interests and ages as well as the iSelect® option which allows customers to create their own plan based on criteria like Bisac, Language, Publisher and/or Geographic Region. And they are convenient for customers because they can be set up to auto-ship and customers can add grids to their lists, making ordering easier. Plus, customers can make changes to their SOP plans on ipage 24/7 and those changes will automatically go into effect the next time a list is run.

So as great as SOPs sound- and they are- how do they differ from iCurate Coming Soon?

iCurate Coming Soon lists are entirely hand-selected by our librarians to be the materials we would want to purchase for our own libraries, saving customers the time and expertise it takes to find the best of the best. Some of our SOPs are also hand-selected by our librarians, but many of them are authors, titles, and series that customers have selected from a pre-populated list, making it difficult to get debut items.

Coming Soon lists are well-balanced and diverse. Our 26 Coming Soon lists are broken down by ages and they cover every area of a library leaving no gaps. Customers choose whether they receive small, medium, or large lists according to their needs. SOP lists carry no guarantee of balance or diversity.

Coming Soon is designed to play well with other lists because the purchase of Coming Soon comes with an Enhanced Deduplication feature that works across ipage on all of a customer’s lists, to help make sure there is no confusion or accidental duplication of orders.

And if all of this still seems confusing, our department stands ready to help customers figure out what would best suit their needs. After all, our goal as librarians is always, to paraphrase the great Ranganathan, to find every book it’s reader!
