October 18, 2017

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. — Consortium Book Sales & Distribution, an Ingram Publisher Services LLC    brand, announces five new publishers for the Spring 2018 season: Black Inc., Blair, Fitzcarraldo Editions, Oberon Books and School of Life. All presses    begin distribution with Consortium on Jan. 1, 2018.

“We are delighted to welcome five new publishers with such a diverse range to our list of award-winning presses,” said Julie Schaper, Vice President, Ingram    Publisher Services – Consortium™.

Black Inc. is an independent Australian publisher of quality non-fiction, fiction and poetry. ABIA (Australian    Book Industry Awards) named Black Inc. the Australian Small Publisher of the Year in 2007, 2009 and 2015. Passionate about important new works of history,    politics, biography, criticism and current affairs, as well as novels and poems that open up new worlds, Black Inc. also publishes commercial self-help    and fiction under the Nero imprint and more academic titles under the La Trobe University Press (LTUP) joint imprint.

Blair (a new publishing house resulting from the acquisition of John F. Blair Publisher by Carolina Wren Press)    is a Durham, NC based press whose new combined publishing program goes    into effect Jan. 1, 2018. Carolina Wren Press, founded in 1974, is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to publish quality fiction, poetry and    nonfiction. They focus heavily on writers that historically might have been neglected by mainstream publishing, as well as developing diverse and vital    audiences through publishing, outreach and educational programs.

Carolina Wren is home to the Lee Smith Novel Prize and the Bakwin Award for Writing by a Woman, as well as a distinguished poetry series.    John F. Blair has earned a venerable reputation for publishing books about travel, history and culture in the American South. Its top-selling titles    include more than a dozen volumes of slave narratives and autobiographies of black leaders, such as the recent This African-American Life    by former Urban League President Hugh B. Price. The press also publishes cookbooks, travel guides, Southern folklore and nature and art books. The    new Blair will publish the latest Lee Smith Novel Prize winner, Beaut by Donald Morrill, in May 2018, while Useful Phrases for Immigrants    by May-lee Chai, winner of the Bakwin Award, will follow in Fall 2018, along with a book of essays by firebrand commentator and essayist Hal    Crowther and other titles.

Fitzcarraldo Editions is a London-based publishing house focusing on ambitious, imaginative and innovative    writing, both in translation and in English. Founded in 2014, Fitzcarraldo Editions has published thirteen books of fiction and twelve essays. This    young press has attracted several prizes: Svetlana Alexievich, whose Second-hand Time was published in May 2016 in Bela Shayevich’s translation,    won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2015. Mathias Enard’s Compass (translated by Charlotte Mandell) won the Prix Goncourt in France in 2015;    Fitzcarraldo’s UK edition, published in March 2017, was shortlisted for the 2017 Man Booker International Prize. In 2016, Claire-Louise Bennett was    shortlisted for the International Dylan Thomas Prize for Pond and was a runner-up for the BBC National Short Story Award. Meanwhile, John Keene’s Counternarratives    won the inaugural Republic of Consciousness Prize, also in 2017. Fitzcarraldo also publishes The White Review, an arts and literature quarterly    magazine.

Oberon Books is one of the UK’s leading publishers for drama and the performing arts. Founded in 1986, its vision    is to publish the best new playwriting from the U.S., the UK and around the world. Oberon Books publishes new playwrights alongside classics, theatre    practice, dance and opera, with a backlist of over 1,500 titles. Oberon’s long list of successes includes Broadway hits, such as Red by John    Logan; One Man, Two Guvnors by Richard Bean; and 1984, in an adaptation by Duncan Macmillan and Robert Icke.

The School of Life, founded by Alain de Botton (bestselling author of How Proust Can Change Your Life    and The Consolations of Philosophy), is devoted to developing emotional intelligence. Their content addresses issues such as how to find fulfilling    work, how to master the art of relationships, how to understand one’s past, how to achieve a calm state and how better to understand and change the    world. Headquartered in London, it operates around the globe with ten international branches (Antwerp, Amsterdam, Berlin, Istanbul, Melbourne, Paris,    São Paulo, Sydney, Seoul and Taipei). Their lead title will be Why You Will Marry the Wrong Person, based on one of the New York Times’ most    shared website articles that de Botton wrote for the New York Times in May of 2016.
